NaBloPoMo: Thanksgiving fail

Today’s writing prompt from NaBloPoMo (National Blog Posting Month) is “What was your worst Thanksgiving food fail?” Neat-o, on topic. Since we don’t host Thanksgiving, I don’t really have a Thanksgiving food fail to share. But I can share some of our favorites from the holiday.

Julie hosts Thanksgiving every year, a huge undertaking. In addition to cleaning her house and making space for 20+ people, she also takes care of the turkeys (our group needs two, smokes then roasted), stuffing (usually two kinds, sausage cornbread and sourdough), mashed potatoes, and sweet potatoes. I bring the pies (usually 5 – pumpkin, pecan, mince, apple and one wild-card pie), side vegetable, holiday cocktail, and an appetizer or two. My aunt brings the olives and pickles (multiple kinds, let’s not be stingy) and my cousin brings the festive holiday jello (red with fruit) and fluff (a green pistachio pudding thing with pineapple, marshmallows and CoolWhip that my kids love). A couple bottles of wine, and we are good to go.

Since Julie hosts, and has first right of refusal on leftovers, I tend to make my own turkey dinner on the Sunday after Thanksgiving, when we decorate our Christmas tree (faux tree, we can decorate anytime we want). Mine is a pared down version with turkey, stuffing, roasted sweet potatoes and a vegetable. And lots of pumpkin pie. That is a requirement.
