thanks for the tip on Smart Chef! I have the same problem, which isn’t a big deal if I am making soup or stir fry, but if I am baking, a correct substitute becomes more important. I will check out Smart Chef and see if it helps as much as my 1967 version of Joy of Cooking

I love using my Iphone in the kitchen! Trying out new recipes is one of my favorite past times but I do not always have all of the ingredients needed. There is the greatest app for just that now called “Smart Chef” which provides substitutions for most ingredients in recipes. You will love it! I know I do.

I will have to try Simply Recipes. I have gotten a few good ideas from the Whole Foods app.

I have tried a lot of the paid shopping apps, but nothing has stuck so far.

oh, thank you for reminding me about the Simply Recipes app. I had heard Elise talk about it at BlogHer food, but that was before I had an iPhone, thus it did not register. Elise has good instructions on her site on how to access Simply Recipes with your iPhone. Ratio - looks interesting. A Michael Ruhlman app based on the book of the same name. Claims to unlock the secrets to cooking, and costs $4.99.

I love the Simply Recipes iPhone app. Like the site, it’s elegant and easy to use, and gives you access to all of the recipe ideas from Elise and her family. I haven’t tried Ratios, because it’s not free (and I’m cheap like that, too). Enjoy your iPhone!
