12 Days of Local Christmas: Cowgirl Creamery

Five wheels of Cheese!

Oh yes, we are to the part of the song I love the best. Five wheels of cheese. And I chose Cowgirl Creamery.

My favorite, and most expensive at $24/pound, is Mt. Tam. A triple-cream made with organic milk from Straus Family Dairy, this was the first aged cheese made by Cowgirl Creamery. The process of making this cheese is very similar to that of Gouda cheese, with a cooked curd and a white mold. I love this cheese with hearty crackers, such as the Raincoast Crisps Cranberry and Hazelnut (yes, I know, not local).

I am pretty sure I suggested to my husband that one of the Cowgirl Creamery Cheese Clubs would be a welcome gift for yours truly this holiday season, but on the off chance it does not make it under the tree, I am secure in the knowledge that I can find Cowgirl Creamery cheeses at Whole Foods, Draeger’s, Andronicos and other local food shops. And if I get really adventurous, a trip to the Ferry Building to visit the Cowgirl Creamery in person is always a delightful (and educational) trip.
