Vintage Recipe: Pennies from Heaven

With an old-fashioned recipe box in my collection, I have loads of vintage recipes to post. This week’s recipe is from the appetizer section, and not only does it look quick and simple, it gives me proof that my interest in entertaining is in my genes!

Pennies from Heaven

  • 1/2 pound cheddar cheese, grated
  • 1/2 cup butter (original recipe called for margarine)
  • pinch of cayenne
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 cup flour

Have butter at room temperature. Work in cheese and cut in flour with pastry cutter. Make into long rolls – place in refrigerator overnight – cut thin. Bake at 375F for 5 minutes (watch carefully). Makes 70 crackers.

The name of this recipe alone sounds “heavenly!” (Bad pun!) I’ve never even thought to make crackers, but this sounds so easy, it would be a shame not to make homemade crackers. They’re bound to be better than most store-bought kinds. Thanks for this idea and easy recipe. :-)

I am going to try this for our next block party – I agree, they sound better than store bought. I will be interested to see if the recipe has stood the test of time. Older recipes often rely on ingredients that don’t perform the same way anymore…I will post a recipe next week that is the perfect example of that!

Yes, it will be interesting, although I don’t think you can go wrong with cheese, butter and flour. You could vary the spices for different flavors. Let all of us know about your results! Now you have me looking forward to your recipe for next week too!
